Description

Transgenerational Trauma

This is a time of war, rising violence, dehumanization, and hatred. To reach peaceful resolutions, we need to examine our own trans-generational trauma. As individuals and as collectives, we need to understand how these legacies affect our self-experience and our relationship to the Other. This reckoning might allow us to hold complexity, and care for all human suffering.

JILL SALBERG, Ph.D. is faculty and supervisor at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, Stephen Mitchell Center for Relational Studies, and a member of IPTAR. In addition to her articles, she is the editor of and contributor to Good Enough Endings: Breaks, Interruptions and Terminations from Contemporary Relational Perspectives (2010) and Psychoanalytic Credos: Personal and Professional Journeys of Psychoanalysts (2022).   She has co-edited with Sue Grand, The Wounds of History: Repair and Resilience in the Transgenerational Transmission of Trauma, and Transgenerational Trauma and the Other: Dialogues Across History and Difference, (2017), both books won the Gradiva Award (2018). Their co-written book Transgenerational Trauma: A Contemporary Introduction published May 2024 Routledge.  She is in private practice in Manhattan and online.

Transgenerational Trauma – A Contemporary Introduction
Transgenerational Trauma – A Contemporary Introduction delves into the complex and expansive field of trauma and its transmission across generations asking, ‘How do our forebearers flow through us?’. The book begins by tracing the history of this field, highlighting its roots in diverse theoretical traditions. It places transgenerational transmissions within the context of attachment theory and research, exploring the roles of victims, perpetrators, and witnesses in the healing process, informed by an ethic of social justice. Salberg and Grand challenge existing psychoanalytic theories, questioning the universal assumptions that often overlook non-Western and non-white patients and cultures.
