Philip RingstromRoberto D'Angelo

Part 2: Lost in Transition
Dr Roberto D’Angelo will consider the increasing visibility of women who transitioned from female to male as teens and who subsequently detransition. He will explore the case of a young trans-man whose life collapsed after transitioning and who, in the process of therapy, came to question the entire premise of their transition. He will consider differering ways of conceptualising gender dysphoria, from the “born in the wrong body” model, to a more person-specific model which draws on complexity theory. Implications for treatment will be explored.

Roberto D’Angelo is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who works with gender-questioning adults and teens. He is the president of the Society for Evidence Based Gender Medicine, a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis, Los Angeles, a past board member of IARPP and a past president of IARPP Australia. His publications examine the ethics of gender-affirmation and highlight the reductionistic medicalisation inherent in today’s trans health care.

The Australian Chapter of IARPP International is pleased to announce its 2020 Seminar Series. The seminars will continue our exploration of Relational theories and practice, and will be of interest to both beginning and more experienced clinicians. Over the last few years we’ve experimented with different formats involving single and multiple presentations; this year we hope to provide opportunities to engage more deeply with three international speakers who will each present two seminars: Robert Grossmark, Ginna Clarke and Steven Stern.
